Common failure symptoms
- Check engine light with boost codes — P0299 underboost is the most common code.
- Oil leak at turbo — oil from the turbo drain into the exhaust. Blue smoke.
- Wastegate rattle — the internal wastegate flapper develops play and rattles at idle. Very common on higher-mileage 1.4T engines.
- Loss of power — turbo shaft play causes boost loss.

Installation and Care
- Find out why the old turbo failed before installing the new one. Oil starvation or contaminated oil will destroy the replacement the same way.
- Change the engine oil and filter. Flush or replace the oil feed line.
- Flush or replace the oil feed line to reduce the risk of restriction and coking.
- Replace the mounting and oil drain gaskets. Prime the turbo with clean oil before startup.
- Inspect the wastegate for free movement and check the intake and exhaust connections for leaks.
