HE400VG Turbochargers

New Holset HE400VG VGT Turbochargers for Cummins X15, ISL and PACCAR MX-13 Engines

The Holset HE400VG is the current-generation variable geometry turbocharger for the Cummins X15 heavy-duty platform — the engine that powers the majority of new Kenworth, Peterbilt, PACCAR, Volvo and Mack trucks on the road today. It replaced the HE451VE starting in the EPA17 emissions tier, and it runs on Cummins ISL and ISC platforms as well. The HE400VG uses an electronic actuator to continuously adjust the nozzle ring vanes for boost, EGR and exhaust brake control — the same Holset VGT principle used across the Cummins lineup, but with an updated actuator design and refined aerodynamics. We stock brand new HE400VG turbochargers across three horsepower tiers and multiple engine platforms: the standard X15 (450-500HP), the high-power X15 (525HP+), and the EPA21 variant, plus the ISL/ISC version and the PACCAR MX-13 application. Every unit is new-built, balanced, and matched by engine serial number. Shops, fleets and distributors order from US stock.

Three HP Tiers, One Turbo Family — Get the Right X15 Match

The HE400VG is the highest-volume heavy-duty turbo replacement in the current market — every new Cummins-powered Class 8 truck since 2017 runs one. As these trucks age into the mileage window where VGT failures start, shops need a reliable new-unit source that does not tie up cash in core charges or gamble on reman quality. Our HE400VG program solves both.

Standard, High-Power and EPA21 Variants

Every HE400VG we ship is 100% new — new CHRA, new wheels, new housings, new nozzle ring. No core deposit no old unit to crate and freight back. The biggest competitor in this space require refundable core deposits on every X15 turbo and sells the actuator separately — we skip the core entirely and the turbo ships complete.

X15, ISL and PACCAR MX-13 All Covered

The HE400VG comes in distinct calibrations for different horsepower ratings. We stock the standard-power variant (5459710 for 450-500HP), the high-power variant (5459711 for 525HP+), and the EPA21 update (5602145). Order the wrong HP tier and the ECM calibration will not match — we verify against the engine serial number before dispatch.

Actuator: Always Replace With the Turbo

The HE400VG is not just an X15 turbo. We also stock the 4352565RX variant for Cummins ISL and ISC engines, and the 2301175 for the PACCAR MX-13. Same turbo family, different calibrations and part numbers for each platform.

ESN Is the Only Reliable Identifier

The electronic VGT actuator should be replaced with the turbo — not reused from the old unit. A worn actuator on a new turbo body produces the same calibration drift and fault codes that killed the original. We recommend ordering the turbo complete with actuator for a clean replacement.

Ships Complete, No Core Deposit

HE400VG part numbers split by emissions tier (EPA17, EPA21), horsepower rating, and engine platform. The ESN (engine serial number) is the only way to confirm which variant your truck runs. We verify every order against the ESN before shipping — the wrong-variant problem never leaves our warehouse.

The Highest-Volume Heavy-Duty Turbo Replacement

One-year warranty on every HE400VG, handled by our US team. Before install, we walk the root-cause check: oil condition, charge-air system integrity, DPF soot load, and crankcase pressure. A new turbo on a truck with excessive crankcase pressure or a loaded DPF will fail on the same timeline. Details on the warranty page.

FAQ

The HE400VG is calibrated differently for each horsepower tier and emissions standard. The 5459710 covers standard-power X15 engines (450-500HP). The 5459711 covers high-power X15 engines (525HP and above). The 5602145 is the EPA21 update. The 4352565RX fits Cummins ISL/ISC engines. The 2301175 fits PACCAR MX-13. These are not interchangeable — each has different compressor and turbine calibrations matched to the engine's air and fuel flow.

We strongly recommend ordering the turbo with a new actuator. The electronic VGT actuator calibrates to the turbo body — reusing a worn actuator on a new turbo risks calibration errors, fault codes and shortened turbo life. We offer complete turbo-plus-actuator assemblies.

By engine serial number (ESN). The ESN identifies the exact engine build — emissions tier, horsepower rating and calibration. Send us the ESN from the engine dataplate and we confirm the correct HE400VG variant. Do not order by model year alone; mid-year changes and spec variations exist.

Same turbo family, different calibration. The PACCAR MX-13 uses the HE400VG platform but with a PACCAR-specific part number (2301175) and different compressor and turbine specifications matched to the MX-13 engine's airflow characteristics. See our PACCAR turbocharger page for details.

All units are 100% brand new. No rebuilt cores, no core charge. New CHRA, new nozzle ring, new wheels, new housings. Balanced and OEM-spec. One-year warranty.

HE400VG Turbocharger: Technical Guide

The Holset HE400VG is the workhorse VGT of the current heavy-duty diesel market. Understanding its design, part number structure, and failure patterns helps shops order correctly and install with confidence.

HE400VG Part Number Structure

Part numberPlatformHP rangeEmissions
5459710Cummins X15450-500HPEPA17
5459711Cummins X15525HP+EPA17
5602145Cummins X15450-500HPEPA21
4352565RXCummins ISL/ISCVariousEPA13+
2301175PACCAR MX-13VariousEPA17+

Each part number corresponds to different compressor and turbine wheel calibrations. Installing the wrong HP tier on an X15 creates a mismatch between the turbo's airflow capacity and the engine's fuel map — the ECM will not calibrate correctly, and performance and emissions compliance suffer.

What Changed From the HE451VE

The HE400VG replaced the HE451VE on the Cummins X15 starting with the EPA17 emissions tier. Key changes include a redesigned compressor wheel with updated blade geometry for improved efficiency at higher pressure ratios, an updated electronic actuator with faster response and improved durability, and refined nozzle ring vane profiles that reduce soot accumulation. The turbine housing bolt pattern and oil/coolant connections remained compatible, but the internal calibrations are different — an HE451VE and an HE400VG are not interchangeable.

HE400VG Failure Patterns

  • Nozzle ring soot loading — The same failure that affects every Holset VGT. Exhaust soot coats the vane surfaces, the ring starts to drag, the actuator works harder, and eventually fault codes set (SPN 2387, SPN 2789). Trucks with high idle time, short trips, or marginal DPF regeneration cycles fail soonest.
  • Actuator failure — The electronic actuator motor or gear train fails from heat and duty cycle fatigue. Symptoms include dead exhaust brake, slow boost response, and VGT position fault codes. Always replace the actuator with the turbo — installing a new turbo body with a worn actuator guarantees a repeat failure.
  • Bearing wear from crankcase pressure — Excessive crankcase pressure pushes oil past the turbo seals and accelerates bearing loading. On X15 engines with high blowby, the turbo is often a symptom of a deeper engine condition. Check crankcase pressure before installing a new turbo.

Installation: HE400VG on the X15

Remove the charge-air piping and exhaust connections, disconnect the oil feed, oil drain and coolant lines, and unbolt the turbo from the exhaust manifold. Before installing the new unit, flush the oil feed line (carbon restriction is the leading cause of premature bearing failure), inspect the coolant lines for blockage, and check the exhaust manifold studs for stretch or corrosion. Install the new turbo, connect all lines, and idle the engine to establish oil and coolant flow. Calibrate the VGT actuator using Cummins INSITE — the actuator must learn the nozzle ring travel range on the specific turbo body. Verify full actuator sweep and check for fault codes before releasing the truck.
