K03 Turbochargers

New BorgWarner K03 Replacement Turbochargers for Ford EcoBoost and Polaris RZR

The BorgWarner K03 is one of the most widely used turbocharger platforms in the world — and we stock it for two very different markets. On the automotive side, the K03 powers the Ford EcoBoost engine family: the two-liter four-cylinder in the Escape, Focus ST, Fusion and Lincoln MKC, and the twin-turbo configurations on the 2.7L and 3.5L V6 in the F-150, Expedition, Navigator and Transit. On the powersports side, the K03 runs the Polaris RZR XP Turbo and Turbo R — the most popular turbocharged UTV in North America. We stock brand new K03 turbochargers across all major BorgWarner part number variants, including left-bank and right-bank units for twin-turbo applications. Every unit is new-built with a billet compressor wheel, water-cooled center section, and matched by the BorgWarner 530-series part number. Shops, dealers and distributors order from US stock.

Dozens of Part Numbers, One Turbo Name — Picking the Right K03

K03 turbo work is high-volume and part-number sensitive. The BorgWarner 530-series numbering system has dozens of variants that look identical on the outside but are calibrated differently — wrong part number means wrong boost curve, wrong wastegate behavior, and a check engine light. We stock the specific variants shops actually need and verify before shipping.

Ford EcoBoost: Every Major Application

Every K03 we ship is 100% new with a billet compressor wheel — forged and machined for improved airflow and durability over cast OEM wheels. Water-cooled center section, new wastegate actuator, ready to bolt on. No core deposit, nothing to return.

Twin-Turbo V6: Left and Right Sides In Stock

We stock K03 turbochargers for the Ford two-liter EcoBoost (Escape, Focus ST, Fusion, Edge, Lincoln MKC and MKZ) and the twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost in the F-150, Expedition, Navigator and Transit. Each application uses a different BorgWarner part number — we carry the specific variants, not a generic "K03" that may not match.

Polaris RZR: Oil-Cooled and Water-Cooled

The Ford 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engines use paired K03 turbochargers — one per cylinder bank. They must be ordered individually as left (driver side) and right (passenger side). We stock both sides for both engine sizes. When one side fails, inspect the other — they usually have similar mileage and wear.

BorgWarner Part Number Is the Only Safe Match

The Polaris RZR XP Turbo (2016-2021) uses an oil-cooled K03, and the RZR Turbo R (2022+) uses a water-cooled version. They are not interchangeable. We stock both generations, matched by Polaris part number. See our Polaris RZR turbocharger page for application details.

Billet Compressor Wheel on Every Unit

The K03 family has dozens of BorgWarner part numbers (53039880xxx) that look physically similar but differ in compressor trim, turbine housing A/R, wastegate calibration and flange configuration. We match by the full BorgWarner number on the old turbo's dataplate — not by engine model alone, because mid-year changes and spec variations exist.

Automotive and Powersports From One Source

One-year warranty on every K03, handled by our US team. On EcoBoost applications, check the charge-air cooler for oil contamination and inspect the wastegate actuator vacuum lines before install. On the RZR, inspect the full intake tract for dust leaks — the leading cause of premature K03 failure on UTVs. See the warranty page.

WHY CHOOSE US

The right K03, matched by part number every time

We verify the BorgWarner part number before dispatch, hold the common K03 variants on a US shelf, and support both automotive and powersports applications from the same inventory. More about our company and quality process.

FAQ

By BorgWarner part number. The two-liter EcoBoost uses different K03 variants depending on the vehicle model and year — the Focus ST, Escape, Fusion and Edge each have distinct part numbers even though the engine displacement is the same. The 2.7L F-150 and 3.5L Expedition/Navigator use larger K03 variants (K03-0469 and K03-0470 for left and right banks). Match by the BorgWarner number on the old turbo (starts with 53039880) or by the Ford casting number.

Two — one per cylinder bank, left and right. They are sold individually. The left-bank (driver side) and right-bank (passenger side) turbos have mirrored oil and coolant connections and are not interchangeable. If one side has failed, inspect the other before reinstalling it — paired turbos accumulate similar wear.

Same turbo family, different configuration. The Ford EcoBoost K03 is water-cooled with a wastegate actuator calibrated for a gasoline engine. The Polaris RZR K03 (2016-2021) is oil-cooled with a different center section. The 2022+ RZR Turbo R uses a water-cooled variant but with different mounting and connections than the Ford version. They are not interchangeable across platforms.

Two primary causes. First, oil coking in the center section — gasoline engines run hotter exhaust temperatures than diesels, and the K03 center section is prone to oil coking on hot shutdown, especially after spirited driving. Letting the engine idle briefly before shutting off reduces coking. Second, wastegate rattle and eventual failure — the wastegate flapper develops play over time and rattles at cold start, progressing to full wastegate failure and over-boosting or under-boosting.

All units are 100% brand new. Billet compressor wheel, new center section, new wastegate actuator. No core charge, nothing to return. One-year warranty.

Yes. General repair shops, Ford specialists and Polaris dealers order K03 turbos as regular stock. Consistent wholesale pricing from US stock. See the wholesale page.

BorgWarner K03 Turbocharger Guide

The K03 is one of BorgWarner's most versatile turbo platforms — a compact, water-cooled, wastegated turbocharger designed for gasoline and small-displacement applications. It has been used on everything from Volkswagen and Audi sedans to Ford trucks and Polaris UTVs. Our coverage focuses on the Ford EcoBoost and Polaris RZR applications that North American shops see most.

Understanding K03 Part Numbers

BorgWarner uses a systematic numbering convention: 5303-988-0xxx, where the last three digits identify the specific variant. The K03-0368 (Ford Escape two-liter) and K03-0469 (Ford Expedition 3.5L left bank) are completely different turbos with different compressor wheels, turbine housings, wastegate calibrations and flange patterns — but both carry the "K03" family name. Ordering by "K03" alone is not sufficient; the full BorgWarner number is required for correct fitment.

EcoBoost K03 Failure Patterns

  • Wastegate rattle — The most common early symptom. The wastegate flapper develops play on its pivot and rattles against the housing during cold start. Over time the rattle worsens and the flapper eventually sticks open (no boost control) or breaks off entirely. Cold-start rattle that clears after warmup is the warning sign.
  • Oil coking — Gasoline turbo exhaust temperatures run significantly hotter than diesel. The K03 center section relies on both oil and coolant circulation to manage heat. Hot shutdown — killing the engine immediately after highway driving or spirited acceleration — traps heat in the center section and cokes the oil. The carbon deposits restrict oil flow and accelerate bearing wear.
  • Charge-air cooler contamination — A failing K03 that leaks oil into the intake side deposits oil in the intercooler. If the intercooler is not cleaned or replaced during turbo replacement, residual oil blows through the new turbo's compressor outlet and creates the appearance of a new oil leak. Always inspect the charge piping and intercooler when replacing a K03.

Twin-Turbo EcoBoost: Ordering and Replacement Notes

The 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engines use two K03 turbochargers — one on each exhaust bank. The left (driver side) and right (passenger side) units have mirrored fittings and cannot be swapped. When one fails, inspect the other — at similar mileage, the surviving turbo is usually not far behind. Many shops recommend replacing both sides during the same service interval to avoid a second teardown within months. Each side is sold individually; order left and right separately and confirm the BorgWarner part number for each bank.
