
The S400SX4 S488 is a BorgWarner AirWerks performance turbocharger with an 88mm billet compressor wheel — the largest inducer in the S400 family. This configuration features a T4 twin-scroll turbine housing with 1.25 A/R. The S488 steps up from the S480 (80mm) with a larger compressor for applications targeting 900-1500+ HP. It is commonly used as the atmospheric charger in large compound turbo setups on Cummins 5.9L/6.7L drag and pull builds, or as a single turbo on very high-output diesel and gasoline engines. The S488 has an 88mm compressor inducer vs 80mm on the S480. It flows more air for higher HP (900-1500+ HP vs 550-1250 HP) but spools slower due to the larger wheel. Choose the S488 when you have outgrown the S480 compressor map.

The S488 is for builds that have outgrown the S480. The 88mm compressor wheel flows more air than the 80mm, supporting higher HP levels before running out of compressor map. If your compound setup is making 1200+ HP on the S480 and you need more headroom, the S488 is the next step.
