RHG6 for Duramax LB7: The First-Gen Duramax Turbo

The LB7 Duramax (2001-2004) was GM’s first diesel V8 for the Silverado/Sierra HD trucks. It uses an IHI RHG6 VGT turbo — different from the Garrett turbos used on later Duramax generations (LLY, LBZ, LMM).

YearsDuramaxTurbo
2001-2004 (this page)LB7RHG6 (IHI VGT)
2004-2010LLY/LBZ/LMMGT3788VA (Garrett VGT)

The LB7 uses an IHI turbo while all later Duramax generations use Garrett. They are not interchangeable.

Common LB7 turbo issues

  • VGT vane sticking — soot buildup jams the variable vanes. Reduced power, DTC codes.
  • Bearing wear — shaft play at 150k-250k miles.
  • Unison ring wear — the ring that controls all vanes simultaneously wears over time.

Installation

  • Direct bolt-on. Ships with gaskets.
  • Flush oil feed line. Prime before startup.
  • Verify VGT operation via scan tool.
