GTP38 for the 7.3L Power Stroke: The Legendary Ford Diesel Turbo

The 7.3L Power Stroke is arguably the most popular diesel truck engine ever made. Trucks with this engine command premium prices because of the engine’s legendary reliability and simplicity. The GTP38 is the stock turbo for the late-model 7.3L (1999.5-2003), and it is a simple, reliable design with no VGT, no electronic actuator, and no variable vanes.

1999 model year note

The 7.3L Power Stroke changed turbos mid-1999. Early 1999 trucks (built before December 1998) use the older TP38 turbo. Late 1999 trucks (built after December 13, 1998) use the GTP38. Check your truck’s build date on the VIN label on the driver door jamb.

Common failure modes

  • Bearing wear — shaft play at 150k-250k miles. Oil in the intake, blue smoke.
  • Wastegate stuck — carbon buildup on the internal wastegate flapper. Loss of power or overboosting.
  • Pedestal O-ring leak — the up-pipe-to-pedestal O-ring degrades, creating an exhaust leak that sounds like a turbo problem but is actually a seal issue.

Installation

  • Ships with wastegate actuator and gaskets.
  • 5-bolt pedestal mount — straightforward bolt-on.
  • Replace the pedestal O-ring (not included — order separately).
  • Flush oil feed line. Prime turbo with clean oil.
  • Idle 3-5 minutes before loading.
