V2S High Pressure Turbocharger for 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Power Stroke

The V2S high-pressure turbo is the inner turbo in the BorgWarner compound twin-turbo system on the 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550 Super Duty 6.4L Power Stroke diesel. The 6.4L Power Stroke was the first light-duty diesel to use compound turbocharging. The HP turbo is a 52mm VGT with electronic actuator that spools first for low-RPM response. It pairs with the V2S low-pressure turbo (65mm fixed geometry). Ford OEM 8C3Z6K682B, International 1848300C92. Built new, dynamically balanced, ships with gaskets. V2S High-Pressure Turbo for Ford 6.4L Power Stroke

The 6.4L Power Stroke uses a BorgWarner V2S compound twin-turbo system (nicknamed “Scorpion”). The high-pressure turbo is the smaller 52mm VGT unit with an electronic actuator. It sits inside the compound assembly closest to the exhaust manifold and spools first.

The HP and LP turbos are bolted together as one compound assembly but can be serviced separately. When diagnosing turbo problems on the 6.4L, determine which half has failed before ordering.

Common failure modes

  • VGT actuator failure — the HP turbo actuator is the most common failure point on the 6.4L turbo system.
  • VGT vane sticking — soot from EGR jams the HP turbo vanes. Derate codes.
  • Bearing wear — the HP turbo runs at very high shaft speed and wears faster than the LP turbo.

Installation

  • The HP turbo is the inner turbo with the electronic actuator attached.
  • We recommend replacing both HP and LP together for long-term reliability.
  • Flush oil feed lines. Prime before startup.
