GT3782VA for Ford 6.0L Power Stroke: The VGT Turbo

The 6.0L Power Stroke brought VGT technology to the Ford diesel truck lineup. The GT3782VA uses Garrett’s AVNT design with 9 movable vanes and an electro-hydraulic VGT solenoid for boost control. This was a significant upgrade from the fixed-geometry GTP38 on the 7.3L.

Build date matters

The 6.0L Power Stroke used three different GT3782VA variants by build date. This listing covers the 2004.5-2005 build date range (September 29, 2003 through November 3, 2004). Check your truck’s production date on the driver door VIN label before ordering.

Common failure modes

  • VGT solenoid failure — the electro-hydraulic solenoid controls vane position. When it fails, the turbo runs at fixed boost.
  • VGT vane sticking — soot and carbon buildup jams the 9 vanes. Unison ring sticks.
  • Bearing wear — shaft play, oil leaks, rising EGT.

Installation and Care

  • Find out why the old turbo failed before installing the new one. Oil starvation or contaminated oil will destroy the replacement the same way.
  • Change the engine oil and filter. Flush or replace the oil feed line.
  • Replace the up-pipe and turbo pedestal gaskets as needed. Prime the turbo with clean oil before startup.
  • Verify the production date and VGT solenoid operation with a compatible scan tool before loading the engine.
